grafting 2

From: Tom Ogren   (Wed Feb 4 23:08:06 2004)
Stages of cleft grafting, as drawn by Shelby Stover. When the graft is complete, all cut areas are covered with grafting tar or grafting wax, to keep the grafts from drying out. Two scions are placed on cuts over 1 inch in diameter. On cuts as large as 3 inchs in diameter, sometimes as many as four scions will be grafted. If all the scions actually sprout and grow in spring, then only one or two of the strongest ones will be left, and the others pruned off. Cleft grafting is a simple way to convert a male tree (allergies) into a female tree (pollen-free). When grafting the cambium layer (which is just beneath the bark) of scion and rootstock must match up evenly for the graft to take.
